  1. I am currently writing my MA thesis on the topic of how to use social media to teach social media…

Statement of the problem and the rationale for the study

We are raising a generation of children and young adults who are educated and privileged enough to know better, and yet also educated and privileged enough to know it doesn’t really matter how they behave online. Is it that people in positions of power, including teachers, do not really understand the extent of what is going on? Do we, as teachers, administrators, community members, not care enough to lead them? How, therefore, can this be brought to the attention of those that do care, and what can we do collectively to make things change? How can we use social media to teach social media?

We need to develop a new strategy. Simply blocking social media websites, labeling them as distractions in school and telling students it is wrong to bully others has been ineffective in promoting change, since new cyber bullying incidents occur daily. If we can’t physically stop cyber-bullying perhaps we can use case studies of bullying to teach empathy to students. If we can use social media examples to highlight the incredible power of social media along with the corresponding devastatingly harmful effects we may be able to raise a greater awareness of the importance of developing socially responsible students who are proactive in their efforts to contribute to an inclusive environment.

  2. Love, love, loved the Twitter activities! Hope to hear more ideas about strategies for using Twitter to promote student interaction in asynchronous courses. Would also like to see a notes sheet for reference. Fantastic ideas!!

  3. Hi Marina,
    Great post, as usual!
Last semester my students started to comment in Twitter the films we watched in class.
One group had to tweet information about Cuba, the scenery for “Habana Blues”. Each student had to post three tweets with information regarding cuban Politics, Culture, Sports, etc. The only requirement was not repeating contents, so they needed to read carefully their mates’posts.

The other group has to tweet the answer to some questions presented in class. These answers implied a review of some grammar points we had worked in class during the semester: describing the main characters’ personality, expressing their opinion about some characters in the film, making hypothesis about the end of the movie, etc. In order to get the 100% of the grade, they also needed to answer at least two mates’ posts.

Both experiences had great results, and I am going to repeat them this semester.

    • Maria, congratulations on your success and thank you so much for sharing your experience with us. I LOVE your tasks and if you permit me I would love to share it with others. Very creative and very cool! I am sure your students were very engaged. The world needs more teachers like you.
